Touching, beautiful, relateable characters. I'll just add that this has a large dose of tragedy to go alongside occasional comedy, so if you're looking for a relaxing night of laughs like I was, don't believe kanopy's "comedy" category on this one too much ;)

The film just made me feel connected to my own family and thoughtful of how I might wish for my children to be more appreciative of the natural world. My kids love this film, it's one of our favorites. The soundtrack is incredible also, a great way to ponder the film long after. I'm really ...Read more

Entertaining for a bit. Really wanted to love this movie, but don't. Thought a lot of it was quite predictable.

movies like this are good indicators of a scary amount of trumpesq bigots who surprisingly know how to read and even use this handy service))

A great film. If you like it, check out the French film Vie Sauvage (Wild Life) a similar story, without the comedy, based on a true story. It's currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

A beautiful meditation on how to ethically raise children. The merits of Viggo's counterculture lifestyle and the lifestyle in capitalist society are pitted against one another. By the end, each person watching can find a way for them and their family to live more ethically. ...Read more

The film had an opportunity to demonstrate how damaging homeschooling children in isolation can be, then shied away last minute, likely due to lack of knowledge. From someone who was homeschooled k-12 against her will, I feel the director did not faithfully represent this misunderstood group, ...Read more

Self-glorifying, anti-Christ drivel. Does a good job of showing how godless, hyper-intellectualism leads to disenfranchisement, narcissism, anarchy, and eventually as shown in this movie, SUICIDE.
Not worth a credit.

I agree with the term "mawkishly sentimental" and also felt it's exaggerated in erudition of things that pertain our culture, I rather recommend to watch "Life Off Grid" here at Kanopy to get a more realistic picture.

I can't bring myself to so thoroughly trash this film, but I certainly agree with your take on "Life Off the Grid." Terrific film. And at something like 34' into that film, our two talking heads sum it up: "It's not about living off grid. It's about thinking differently." Can't up the ante ...Read more

I give it four stars, though a bit mawkishly sentimental and contrived at times, that doesn't ruin the central current of the journey and it's story. It paints an accurate, somewhat morbid picture of life today in the suburbs, and one man's alternative life for him and his children. If you ...Read more

An important thought experiment, taking the ideals of some counter-culturalists today to an intense extreme. Or are they one version of longstanding human ideals: Overeducated super athletes? Is the price of a fiercely authentic life worth it in their case? The film answered this question ...Read more

Viggo Mortensen at his best in a wonderful story of family. Not just a portrait of flaws, but also a study of mortality and for better or worse, leaves one questioning the complex worlds we live in. One of the best films I’ve seen this year.

Heartfelt film enlightening the soul.

Garbage, savage animal eatings, attacks on Christianity, not believable scenes, political agendas, uncalled for pervert type nudity, didn't finish the movie as a result.

Enjoyed the movie. Gorgeous man that Viggo. Excellent actor too! He adds great depth to any part he plays.

Beautiful scenery, beautifully filmed. The characters were very flawed, but were also understandable and, IMO, likable, even though I disagree with the stance of many of them. The main characters evolved, and grew from their experiences in this story, even tough they also stayed true to ...Read more

Highly recommend. The film had great acting, cinematographically it was wonderful also, use of lighting and framing. I loved the honesty and delivery of lines. Viggo's character had a lot of integrity. The characters both adults and children alike are flawed but have a lot of heart. ...Read more

Yes, quirky and touching, but mainly a lightly handled take on the intersection of "real" (modern Western white society) life and back-to-the-land beliefs. Problematic because each side is shown in part stereotype, but that does allow you to laugh (and cry) at both sides. Well acted by both ...Read more

interesting. SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't watched it yet.
I would have preferred if they are so close to nature, and truth, that they weren't such blood thirsty killers, hunters. And climbing a straight up stone cliff, with young children is a bit much. lucky no one got killed

Namibia has very high rates of HIV/AIDS and he doesn't advise him to wear a condom when he presumably "ha[s] sex with a woman." But goes on to give some nonsense speech like he's Polonius. What a fool. Go fuck the natives in other words but obviously he's ten times more likely to fuck ...Read more

It reminds me of the late 60s and early 70s when one spoke of the ideal of "getting back to nature". Its a hard life but the joy is there. And, the kids were great!

Why do white people in America (men in particular) continue to believe that they are oppressed? "Power to the people. Stick it to the man." What drivel.

Ugh! TMI on the frontal nudity! Honestly it was horrible seeing your junk! It was like a pervert indecently exposing himself. WTF?! Movies have hit a new low assuming everyone is looking for a bit of mild porn in their flick.. The rest of the movie is good but PLEASE actors, refrain from ...Read more

I had forgotten the brief scene but you reminded me. It worked, showing that their lifestyle made them strong and lean, that he defied customs, and that the youngest child had as much right to uphold a rule as Dad. Plus, funny.
the film had an R rating. If you don't click the consent ...Read more

Nudity was at a minimum, Especially for today. Even on TV everyone is naked.
and if you are going to do nudity, I am tired of it being women, and no men.
so by all means, 20 seconds of Viggo. what you would see in a Greek or Roman statue.
